Following the successful launch of the TUI Green IT Award last year, the second round of applications is currently underway. With the award, TUI honours the sustainability commitment of hundreds of IT partners and suppliers who share TUI's holistic understanding of sustainability. The award is a close cooperation between technology and procurements teams led by Isabelle Droll (Master Domain Owner) and Paul Walker (Group Procurement Director).
“Technology is key to accelerate the sustainable transformation of TUI. The sustainable transformation ahead of us is a huge challenge, impacting every aspect of our business and technology landscape. Therefore, we want to work closely together with our tech suppliers through the TUI Green IT Award. We will need their enthusiasm and creativity to make the transformation a success,” says Pieter Jordaan, member of the GEC and CIO of TUI Group.
In recent weeks, TUI's technology suppliers have been invited to submit their sustainability initiatives. A jury – including TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel and two members of the GEC Thomas Ellerbeck (Chief Sustainability Officer) and Pieter Jordaan (Chief Information Officer) – will evaluate the submissions and select the winners. The application round runs until 15th of December. The winners will be announced in March 2024.
Once again this year, there are three categories of the TUI Green IT Awards, which are based on the three pillars of the TUI Sustainability Agenda: People, Planet, Progress.
- People: The entries in the "People" category should empower people to drive the sustainable transformation. They help local people and communities.
- Planet: The "Planet" category is aimed at initiatives that reduce the ecological footprint.
- Progress: Initiatives in the "Progress" category aim to accelerate change. They should strengthen the positive social and environmental impact of holiday experiences.
Suppliers in the technology sector can apply with their initiatives in those three categories. The team led by Isabelle Droll, who is responsible for sustainability in the tech organisation as part of the Tech Leadership Team, has used the experience gained from the first award to make some changes: For example, the survey for applicants was streamlined to simplify the application process and thus encourage a greater variety of initiatives to participate. In addition, documents were created to support the application process.
"With Amazon, Deutsche Telekom and QA Ltd. we had great winners at the launch of the award representing the diversity of sustainability initiatives in the technology sector. That's why it was important to us to invite the individual winning teams to our company and present their projects to the global tech teams in online sessions. In this way, an exchange take place beyond the award, in which we learn from each other," says Frieder Olfe (Head of Sustainability Technology).
