Increasing customer satisfaction through sustainability

Sustainability at TUI Blue

Hotels are in direct contact with the surrounding local communities. They therefore render an essential contribution to greater sustainability in the holiday destinations. However, less than 1 per cent of all hotels globally are certified accordingly.

Across the Group, more than 80 per cent of all hotels in TUI Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio have been certified to a standard recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). As the proportion of certified hotels is still below-average due to the strong growth of the TUI Blue brand, the Group is planning to increase it to 90 per cent by 2022. An independent, recognised certification ensures that TUI Blue hotels deliver both social and ecological added value. They thus meet the highest social and environmental standards in the market. Evaluations have shown that hotels with sustainability certificates reduce, for instance, their CO2 footprint by up to 10 per cent and their waste volume by 24 per cent. They also cut freshwater consumption by nearly 20 per cent.

Obtaining a sustainability certificate pays off twice: sustainable hotels do not only generate savings, but also deliver higher quality and higher customer satisfaction. Implementation of the increase in the proportion of hotels with sustainability certificates is part of the “Sustainable Blue” initiative.
