The opening of the international tournament has been celebrated with a festive ceremony on 29 November with representatives from the International Socca Federation (ISF), the Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, the Mayor of Cancún Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña and representatives from TUI. In the first game, the Mexican national team won against Belgium 3:0.
"From the kickoff of the first match, the mood on the pitch and on the stands with fans cheering and celebrating has been amazing. This was once again proof that sport and travel together can create magical moments full of joy, respect and shared passion. That’s what football is all about and what we aim to further promote through our partnership with TUI", said Thanos Papadopoulos, CEO of the International Socca Federation.
Around the pop-up stadium, a fan zone area invites fans and players alike to relax between the matches. In addition to the opportunity to get something to eat and drink, play foosball or just enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery of Cancún, there are also TUI stands where representatives inform visitors about TUI's excursions and offers in the region.
TUI is also taking the opportunity to inform locally about current job offers, aiming to further increase local hiring and a closer integration with the communities where it operates. TUI as well as its hotel joint ventures RIU and Royalton are sizeable employers in the region for incoming tourism, at the same time TUI offers an increasing amount of holidays for Mexican customers.
