Turquoise waters, golden sand and crystal-clear lagoons are what most people picture when imagining the perfect beach for their summer holidays, but can beauty actually be measured scientifically?
As travellers increasingly seek out picture-perfect coastlines for their 2026 holidays, new research from TUI’s family friendly travel experts has revealed the world’s most beautiful beaches using scientific image analysis.
By examining everything from water colour and brightness to sand quality and surrounding natural scenery, TUI created a ‘Beautiful Beach’ Index to uncover the most visually stunning beach destinations to add to your travel wishlist for 2026.
Key findings:
- Yasmine Hammamet Beach in Tunisia ranked as the overall winner, scoring 8.10/10 on the Beautiful Beach Index thanks to its high share of vivid blue water and bright golden sand.
- Türkiye dominated the rankings, with beaches in Belek, Bodrum, Side and Gündoğdu all scoring highly for water saturation, sand quality and overall coastal balance.
- Notably, 50% of the top 10 beaches featured in the ranking are home to TUI Magic Life resorts, including Africana, Bodrum, Belek, Jacaranda and Masmavi, reflecting a strong presence in some of the world’s most visually striking coastal destinations.

Yasmine Hammamet Beach in Tunisia is the most beautiful beach in the world
Tunisia ranks as the home to the world’s most beautiful beach according to TUI’s Beautiful Beach Index, with Yasmine Hammamet Beach achieving the highest overall score of 8.10 out of 10. The beach scored particularly high for its balance of turquoise water, bright sand tones and natural coastal scenery, while also maintaining relatively low levels of visible concrete development. The beachfront stretches for around four kilometres, with soft golden sand and calm Mediterranean waters that make it especially popular with families and watersports lovers.
Türkiye follows closely behind, with İçmeler Bay Beach in Bodrum ranking for the second most beautiful beach, achieving an impressive Beautiful Beach Index score of 7.87/10. Surrounded by pine-covered mountains, the beach stood out for its vivid water saturation, golden sand colouring and balanced coastal landscapes, helping the country dominate the upper end of the ranking. Interestingly, İçmeler was originally a quiet fishing village before transforming into one of the Turkish Riviera’s most adored beach resorts.
Saint Lucia ranks third overall thanks to the strong performance of Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay, which scored 7.83/10 in the Beautiful Beach Index. The Caribbean beach achieved some of the highest water saturation scores in the entire dataset, combined with bright sandy shoreline tones and lush surrounding scenery. Reduit Beach is one of Saint Lucia’s longest stretches of sand, running for nearly two miles along the island’s famous Rodney Bay - it is often described as Saint Lucia’s ‘classic Caribbean’ beach, making it one of the island’s most popular spots for ‘fly-and-flop’ holidays.
Türkiye has the most beautiful beaches
When looking at the individual beach rankings, Türkiye secured four spots in the overall top 10, more than any other country analysed. İçmeler Bay Beach in Bodrum ranked second overall, while Belek Beach, Gündoğdu Beach and Kadriye Beach all placed strongly thanks to their high water saturation and warm sand tones.
Across the Turkish beaches analysed, destinations consistently combined bright Mediterranean water, expansive sandy shorelines and relatively low levels of visible urban development. This balance of natural scenery and vibrant coastal colour helped Türkiye emerge as the standout country in TUI’s Beautiful Beach Index for 2026.
TUI Magic Life resort beaches take up 50% of the top 10
TUI MAGIC LIFE resorts featured prominently in the Beautiful Beach Index, with five resorts located on beaches that ranked among the top 10 overall. TUI MAGIC LIFE Africana in Tunisia claimed the number one spot through its location on Yasmine Hammamet Beach, while TUI MAGIC LIFE Bodrum, Belek, Jacaranda and Masmavi are all situated on beaches in Türkiye that placed in the overall top 10 ranking. With every TUI MAGIC LIFE hotel located directly on a beachfront, the results underline its connection to destinations where the beach is a defining part of the overall holiday experience.

Methodology:
- TUI set out to identify the world’s most visually picturesque beach destinations using a structured image-analysis methodology.
- To do so, a seed list was created using the top beach destinations. Then aerial imagery of major beach destinations was collected using consistent satellite views from Google Earth. Each image was standardised in size and processed using Python-based image analysis techniques.
- All images were converted from RGB colour space into HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) colour space, allowing beach characteristics such as ocean colour, sand tone, brightness, and saturation to be measured more accurately.
- The analysis assessed a range of visual beach qualities, including ocean depth and vibrancy, sand appearance, beach composition, and visible urbanisation. Water masks were used to detect ocean-coloured pixels, with deeper blue ocean tones prioritised over pale turquoise or green lagoon water. Additional weighting was applied to richer and darker ocean hues, while shallow reef-heavy lagoon areas received a small penalty.
- Sand masks were also applied to identify beach-coloured pixels, with warmer golden and beige sand tones scoring more highly. Sand brightness and saturation were included to evaluate overall beach appearance. The methodology also considered the proportion of visible water and sand within each image to assess overall beach composition, while score caps were applied to avoid over-rewarding favourable image framing.
- To account for human development, grey and concrete detection techniques were used to identify visible urban infrastructure, with heavily built-up beachfronts receiving a reduction in score.
- All image-analysis metrics were then combined into a weighted Beautiful Beach Index, with each destination receiving a final score out of 10.
- Data is accurate as of May 2026.
-Caveats-
- Images may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, lighting, seasonality, tidal conditions, or image capture timing.
- Some beaches naturally feature shallow turquoise lagoons or reef systems, which may score lower under a methodology designed to reward deeper blue ocean tones.
- Urban infrastructure visible near beaches may reduce scores even where resorts are considered desirable by tourists.
- Image framing can influence results, as some aerial views include larger surrounding land or resort areas than others.
