Find out why Cancún is such a popular destination in the UK.

Jason Brewer: Cancún

Jason Brewer, Purchasing Manager Cancún

As holiday bookings made with the world’s leading tourism group TUI have shown, European holidaymakers’ favourite getaway is the Mediterranean. This year’s number one travel destination among European travellers is Spain, followed by Greece and Turkey. Italy and Cyprus, which rank fourth and fifth, are also in vogue. However, the map of people’s favourite travel destinations also features a number of surprising spots. A complete overview of this year’s most popular travel destinations is available here.

We have interviewed our colleagues from Product & Purchasing about a number of holiday destinations and their rising popularity. In the next few weeks, you will gain insights into a number of destinations and learn more about the surprising favourite spots booked by European holidaymakers. Talking to Jason Brewer, we are seeking to find out why the Mexican city Cancún is so popular this year, above all in the UK. This year Cancún is the fifth most popular destination in the UK.

Why is Cancún so popular this year especially in the UK?
I can honestly say that nowhere offers value for the beach holiday experience quite like Cancún does. The destination offers top of the range, 5* All Inclusive products at very affordable prices, and this makes it fairly unique. It’s a destination that offers variety, Cancún has a more lively vibrant atmosphere and for those who want a relaxing break on the beach, Riviera Maya is perfect. Unlike some Caribbean destinations, Cancún also offers so much to do outside the hotel and beach, regardless of your interests or hobbies, there is something for everyone.

What is your task in Cancún? How do you contribute to the holiday experience?
Our principle task is to negotiate the room rates with the hoteliers in the destination, so we need to make sure that the hotels continue to be affordable to our customers. We also work with teams across TUI and markets our customers come from to ensure the quality of our hotels is maintained. A key part of our role is working to introduce new hotels to the programme and koordinating supplier relationships in the destination to make sure that TUI is the first company suppliers and customers want go on holiday with. Put simply, we make sure we have the best hotels at the best possible prices for our customers.

What is new in our program in Cancún this year?
This year we introduced multi centres into the programme for the first time in Mexico. This means that consumers have the option of experiencing Cancún and Riviera Maya and spend a few days in one of the fascinating small islands Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel all located off the Mexico coast. All have different charms – Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are great for snorkeling, with Cozumel having the second largest barrier reef in the world! However, if I had to recommend one, I would say Holbox is the place to go, the island is virtually untouched and has a pure natural beauty and incredible wildlife. They don’t even have cars there – you get around in a golf buggy! We have also been working on adding around 20 new hotels to the programme due to the capacity increase for Summer 2019.

What do you love most about Cancún?
If I had to choose one thing that really makes Mexico a special destination, it has to be the people and the quality of service. As a veteran of travel in the Caribbean and in Europe, I can honestly say that I have never come across people as friendly as the Mexicans, and the way you are looked after from the moment you land in the airport to the moment you check out of your hotel is so great to see. It truly is “service with a smile”, and that isn’t easy to find in modern tourism.

Can you tell us an insider tip? – What do people have to see in Cancún?
It depends on your individual taste of course. If you are a party goer then Coco Bongos in the centre of Cancún is an absolute must-see. It is an American-style dinner show and night club, which is incredible and a unique experience. For the more culture, the ruins of the ancient city of Chichen Itza are a fascinating trip. The “cenotes” (lagoons) are also worth a visit, and look out for the odd crocodile around the Cancún lagoon. Don’t worry though, there are safe spots to observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
