Spring Highlight: Gran Canaria

What are TUI customers’ favourite travel destinations? The tourism group has published its new TUI Holiday Atlas for Spring 2019, sharing interesting insights into the holiday decisions taken by TUI customers in several European countries. We are presenting the particular characteristics of some of these holiday destinations in TUI’s Easter Special “Spring Highlights”:

Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Canaries, known for its diverse, beautiful landscapes. Water sports enthusiasts find perfect conditions, and the island’s mountainous landscape make it a great hiking destination.

For many reasons, Gran Canaria is a very popular travel destination, in particular during the Easter period: during “Semana Santa“ (Holy Week), most Spanish people are on holiday and life is characterised by religious traditions. During the whole of Easter Week, various traditions take place every day. One of the highlights is the procession of La Burrita, which runs through the historic centre of the capital and is followed by locals with life-size statues of Jesus placed on donkeys as a sign of peace and hope.

During the Easter period, the climate in Gran Canaria is very pleasant: in April, temperatures range between 17°C and 23°C. With eight sunshine hours a day, the island offers its visitors perfect weather for sunbathing, active holidays, or sightseeing.

The traditional regional cuisine of the Canaries includes “papas arrugadas“ – wrinkled potatoes. These are small, unpeeled potatoes with a particularly high starch content boiled in seawater. Another important ingredient of the Canarian cuisine is “gofio“ – finely ground flour made from wheat, barley and maize.

One of the island’s key food ingredients is barley, which is initially roasted and then ground into flour.

Apart from kilometres of dunes stretching behind Maspalomas Beach, the “Pico de las Nieves“ is not only considered to be the island’s highest peak. From its top at an altitude of 1,949 metres, you can see Volcano Teide in the neighbouring island of Tenerife.

Gran Canaria is one of the most popular holiday islands among TUI customers across Europe. TUI ‘s hotel portfolio currently includes 15 hotels in Gran Canaria, among which RIU and TUI Family Life.
