Scouting Startups in Silicon Valley

In December TUI Nordic colleagues visited Silicon Valley to meet two dozen data & analytics startups in the travel sector. The trip was also used to visit the established creative agencies Ideo, designers of the first Apple mouse as well as work on TUI‘s global innovation approach with TUI colleagues from Group CRM, Group Big Data and One Aviation.

„We are looking for the brightest minds in travel and data analytics to collaborate in the future“ – Andreas Markerud, Head of Data Analytics & Machine Learning at TUI in the Nordics. „What we found was a very open, collaborative landscape with many of the big players in just a few square kilometers. But we are also debating on eye-level. In many meetings, TUI challenged the startups, not the other way around.”

The trip was organised by Group innovation manager Camillo Weinz: “To stay relevant in the digital world, TUI needs to collectively invest in innovation. The acquisition of Musement a few weeks ago shows that we can fill open areas with startup talent and technology.”

One concrete outcome of the trip is the set up of follow-ups with two startups in the language processing and data analytics space, which can possibly help TUI stay on the cutting edge.
